Are your little ones YouTube fans?
My girls certainly are.
However, you are most likely well aware of the fact that everything on YouTube isn’t kid-friendly.
It seems as though the Google world has finally listened to the pleas of parents. Just last month, Google announced a new app available on iOS and Android devices geared to a younger audience…YouTube Kids!
This new app wonderful app gives parents the opportunity to exert a little more control over the videos their kiddos watch on YouTube, while still allowing kids to access the videos they love.
When they first open the app, kiddos see large clickable video tiles that direct them to their favorite television shows. Additional options on the screen allow youngsters to search for other kid-friendly shows, music, learning channels (like Khan Academy!), and more. A more traditional search feature is also available that allows kids to search for their favorite YouTube videos/channels…for my daughters, these videos include Barbie and Frozen dolls in different scenes, people unwrapping chocolate eggs, and most interestingly to me…children (sometimes adults) unpacking toys from boxes, narrating the items and “accessories” included.
My parents say these toy channels are like the Sears or Toys ‘r’ Us catalogs of my childhood….
You can breathe a sigh of relief knowing the viewer comments typically seen on YouTube videos are gone, and if your child inadvertently searches for something inappropriate, a warning message appears preventing access to inappropriate content.
Definitely download this wonderful app on your kids’ devices, your cellphone..because we all know kids feel the need to use them..and delete the regular YouTube app!!
