The first few days of 2016 are in the books! I’ve been really diligent (and honest!) with our budget binder, and I think I’ve already identified some areas for improvement with our budget…or lack thereof!
Just knowing that I will record a specific expense has REALLY made me think twice before making purchases! For some reason, writing a purchase in our budget binder is completely different than recording a transaction in a checkbook register…and I have NO idea why that is!
Do I really need that new pair of pants? Even though they are soooo adorable? Probably not.
Do I have to buy that name brand can of diced tomatoes, or will the store brand suffice? Are the ingredients the same? Yes? Store brand it is.
As I’ve been recording my purchases, specifically at the grocery stores, I’ve noticed that I probably did not provide enough lines on the expense sheet for my budget binder!
Therein lies the problem!
I’m making far too many little purchases that no doubt will “nickel and dime” us to death!
This realization is a huge reason I decided to dive into our budget binder this year. I know roughly what we spend each month, I realize that I spend too much on groceries, and I know the bills don’t change, but I just needed to see where our money is going. Physically recording expenses (place, amount, and date of purchase) and actually seeing how quickly those expense sheet lines are filling up has led me to two conclusions…epiphanies if you will.
- I MUST make fewer trips to the grocery store!! It just has to be done!
- I MUST provide you with extra copies of generic expense sheets!!! 🙂
Making a list, and REMEMBERING to take the list to the store, is a must for this grocery shopper! I’ll be sharing my grocery printable soon!

Be sure to share our budget binder with your friends!
I’ll be posting a new printable planner that I’ve started using that matches the background of the budget binder! It’s sad how happy the matching backgrounds makes me 🙂
